Company History

John Deere, the man behind the company, began his own small tool manufacture and repair business in 1837 in the city of Grand Detour, Illinois. Already a successful blacksmith, Deere turned his hand to creating better tools for farmers, such as the first steel plow made from a saw blade. Deere died in 1886 after decades of leading his company and building innovative products, but the legacy lived on and expanded over the course of the 20th century.
