Buying a Hay Baler
The right hay baler can save you time, effort, and money. Of course, it’s not always obvious which one is the “right” hay baler until you’ve actually purchased and used it. That’s why the experts at Bartron Supply Inc. have created this helpful hay baler buying guide.
Size of Operation
Generally speaking, larger hay balers produce larger and heavier bales. While this is great for larger farms that need as much hay as they can get, smaller operations typically don’t need as much hay. If you’re running a smaller operation, get a smaller baler.
Volume and Speed
Ask yourself what kinds of bales you want to produce. Faster or more energy efficient balers sometimes can’t produce heavy bales, so they’re not useful if that’s the only kind of bale you want to make. You should also factor in things like cost of transport. If the bales are too heavy or too numerous to transport economically, that’s a problem. Focus on the cost per baled ton and factor in operation and wire cost.
Square or Round Baler
While there are many, many different baler subtypes, all of them can be broadly classified into one of two categories: those that produce square/rectangular bales, and those that produce round bales. Square bales are easier to stack and store compared to round bales. However, round bales can pack hay more tightly, and are generally a better option if you only bale occasionally or the hay needs to travel a long distance.
